Primary Purpose:

The Security Manager provides strong leadership of the Security department and oversees a comprehensive effort to ensure the safety and security of visitors, staff, and collections.

Openness: Oversee surveillance systems, guide staff in recognizing abnormal conditions, and lead appropriate responses. Remain open minded and collaborate with colleagues to find solutions to problems

Respect: Model professionalism, serve as an escalation point for sensitive situations, and uphold confidentiality. Demonstrate and coach security team in respectful policy enforcement, emergency management, and deescalation techniques.

Growth: Mentor and develop Security Officers, create training materials, build relationships with museum colleagues within the Museum and at other institutions, and continuously improve security knowledge.

Dynamism: Coordinate event security, lead inspections, and manage team responses with energy and adaptability.

Engagement Quality: Ensure staff deliver informative, engaging visitor interactions; provide coaching and feedback.

Visitor Service Excellence: Deliver exceptional customer service personally and across the team, addressing performance gaps.

Essential Functions:

  • Assess risks and implement appropriate measures to protect the collection, facility, visitors, and employees while maintaining the museum’s commitment to customer service.
  • Oversee the day-to day operations of the 24-hour Security department, including staffing, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Design and update policies and procedures to improve operations.
  • Serve as Project Manager and Primary Operator on the Museum security system. Maintain ID and key control.
  • Prepare, implement, and maintain the Facility Security and Emergency Preparedness plan, in cooperation with others in Museum leadership.
  • Develop and implement a staff training program (for Security and other staff) on relevant security issues and emergency procedures.
  • Play a direct and leading role in the Museum’s response to emergencies.
  • Act as primary advisor to the Museum leadership team on security issues.
  • Promote customer service standards and assist visitors courteously.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required, BA/BS in Criminal Justice or related is preferred.
  • Experience: Must have a minimum of seven (7) years of security experience, including at least three (3) years at a supervisory level.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of Museum policies, security, emergency response, and leadership.
  • Dependability: Reliable, detail‑oriented, and strong work ethic.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal skills in English and the ability to formulate and articulate security strategies and solutions to all levels of management in a context that aligns with the culture of the organization
  • Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple responsibilities accurately.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Professional, engaging demeanor with interest in visitor interaction.
  • Policy Enforcement: Ability to enforce policies politely and professionally.
  • Technical Skills: Basic computer proficiency; email, Museum software, security systems, wireless technology.
  • Flexibility: Variable schedule including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior security leadership experience required, experience in a cultural institution preferred
  • Motivated leader and team player who thrives in fast‑paced environments.
  • Creative, adaptable, and flexible in managing complex security operations.
  • Passion for the Museum’s mission, with the ability to inspire and guide staff while engaging visitors.

Working Conditions:

  • Supervisory responsibility will require being on call and remaining on site during emergencies/events.
  • Essential role; extended hours possible during emergencies or inclement weather.
  • Must adhere to uniform and appearance standards.
  • Work across Museum spaces and grounds using radios/communication devices.
  • Requires strong communication skills and visual acuity to monitor crowds.
  • Patrols indoors/outdoors in all seasons; exposure to noise up to 90 decibels.
  • Flexible scheduling required to meet operational needs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to see, hear, and communicate effectively.
  • Stand/walk for prolonged periods (up to 12‑hour shifts). May be required to run in response to incidents in the building or on the grounds.
  • Stamina to climb stairs, bend, stretch, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Endurance to remain on duty longer when supervising during emergencies/events.
